Links, Bullets and Section Headings that have
significant Penn State-specific content will be preceded by a Penn
State blue shield icon.
This course is designed primarily for use on Windows, using Notepad for text (.php file) editing, Mozilla Firefox for Web browsing, Penn State Personal Web Service and PASS Gateway for Web space access. It may be adapted for others; your mileage may vary.
Before beginning, connect to your Web space.
Ensure that the PASS Gateway is connected
and you have ready access to place files in your Personal Web space
- the "www" folder of your PASS. To keep yourself organized, you
may wish to place all files used in this course in a subfolder of
your www folder - such as www/phpclass.
Next have a browser handy, such as Mozilla Firefox.
Finally, have a text editor ready, such as Notepad. Ensure you can save files with other extensions besides .txt such as .php. Notepad is typically available from the Windows Start button -> (All Programs) -> Accessories
For a quick lesson on saving a Web page file in
Notepad to your Web space, see helloworld_save.php.
