Polarized Protons in RHIC

RHIC has two rings for two beams, circulating in opposite directions and guided by superconducting magnets. The beams are referred to as the blue beam and the yellow beam. The protons in each ring are grouped in bunches to provide high local density and high collision luminosity. Each yellow and blue bunch is polarized independently. Collisions occur between pulses about every 100 ns.
