Homeland Security
The White House’s Strategy for Homeland Security (2002) says (page 2): "Homeland security is a concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America’s vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recover from attacks that do occur."
Penn State Harrisburg has been partnering with regional entities, from higher education, the private sector, and the nonprofit sector, to begin development of greater homeland security programming – whether in teaching, research, or service. But Penn State Harrisburg is also nested within Penn State University.
This Web site documents general efforts in homeland security programming at Penn State Harrisburg, as well as providing entrée to resources related to homeland security. Various pages document what Penn State as a complete university is doing. Several thoughtful works have developed on what would constitute an effective homeland security curriculum.
Key actors in homeland security at the governmental level are, of course, the Department of Homeland Security as well as Pennsylvania’s own homeland security and emergency management agencies. There are many resources available to those interested in homeland security; this Web site includes a number of these as well.
Finally, many experts are a part of the Penn State Harrisburg network, including those from throughout the Penn State system, neighboring institutions of higher education, and representatives from both the private and nonprofit sectors.
