NCAA Basketball rules with these IM modifications will govern play.
GENERAL ELIGIBILITY
Each player who participates in the intramural sports program must assume the risk of injury. Players should have personal accident insurance to cover injuries and accidents. It is the team captain’s responsibility to inform all teammates of this. Concerning ambulance service – it does not cost anything to call an ambulance. However, it is the injured person’s responsibility to pay for ambulance transportation costs should he/she be transported to a hospital. Police Services and the IM Sports Assistant on duty will determine proper immediate care.
All players must be currently enrolled PSU students, faculty, or staff. Players MUST have their PSU ID card in order to gain entrance to the CUB. Before entering their names in the scorebook, players MUST show their PSU ID card or Non-affiliate pass to the IM Assistant before every game and upon request.Teams found playing with an ineligible player will forfeit their season.
PSU alumni who have graduated within the past year AND are non-affiliate members of the fitness facility may also be rostered on a team.
All players’ names, email addresses, phone numbers, and student ID numbers must appear on the team rosters.
There is no ratio of males: females on a team. All male or all female teams are permitted.
All teams must play when scheduled. No schedule changes will be made.
No intercollegiate basketball players are permitted to play intramural basketball
Absolutely NO alcoholic beverages are permitted at any activity sponsored by the Intramural Sports Department. If a player or team violates this rule, the player or team will be suspended from the league. If it is determined by the official or that a player is under the influence of alcohol/drugs, the player will be immediately referred to the IM Sports Assistant on duty.
TEAM ATTIRE
Team shirts with numbers are REQUIRED. Shirts must be the same or similar color with a clearly visible number (1 or 2 digits) on the back (front is optional). The numbers must be at least 6 inches tall. NO TAPE will be permitted for numbers…..Use markers, spray paint, or have shirts screened.
Only regulation court shoes are permitted on the court.
Please do not wear wet shoes of any kind on the gym floor before, during, or after contests.
No jewelry or hats may be worn during games
GAME FORMAT
There will be a grace period of 5 minutes for the 9:00 scheduled game. There is no grace period for the 10:00 game. Games will result in forfeit for teams not having enough players to start the game.
A minimum of 4 rostered players is needed to start and continue a game.
Any team who forfeits twice will be dropped from the league.
The first half will start with a jump ball. The second half start will be determined by the possession arrow.
The game will consist of two 20-minute running halves.
Only during the last 2 minutes of each half will the clock be stopped for all fouls, jump balls, violations, and timeouts. Exception: the clock will continue after successful field goals.
A 2-minute half-time will be strictly observed
The 3-point rule will be in effect from the 3-point arc. When shooting, the player’s toes must be beyond (not touching) the 3-point arc in order for 3 points to be awarded.
In all held-ball situations, teams will alternate taking the ball out of bounds at the spot nearest to where the situation occurred. The possession arrow will determine all held balls
All substitutes MUST be waved in by the official. Violations will result in a technical foul and loss of ball possession.
All players on the bench must remain seated or stand behind the sideline.
Throughout the game, teams must line up promptly for free throws. A technical foul will result against the team who deliberately stalls in these situations according to the discretion of the officials.
TIMEOUTS
Each team will be permitted two full and one 30-second timeout per half.
Each team will be permitted 1 timeout in the first overtime period and no timeouts in sudden death overtime.
During a dead ball, any offensive or defensive player may call a timeout.
FOULS
5 fouls per player = fouling out. Any player who fouls out during regulation play remains fouled out for any overtime play as well.
Any flagrant foul involving violent contact which may cause injury to an opponent will result in expulsion from the game and carry a 2- game suspension with it. Fighting carries an automatic ejection from the league. The IM Director and IM Assistant reserve the right to deal with these violations.
Officials will have absolute authority during the game. Technical fouls will be called for abuse of officials or use of abusive language.
Two technical fouls on the same player will result in ejection of that player from the game as well as a 1- game suspension.
Three technical fouls on one team will result in forfeiture.
Any offensive charge will result in a player/team foul PLUS no points scored.
FREE THROWS
Free throws will be awarded as per NCAA rules.
7 - 9 team fouls = one-and-one situation; 10 and more team fouls = 2 shots
OVERTIME
In the event of a tie game at the end of regulation play, a 2-minute overtime period will be played. During the overtime period, fouls and clock stoppage will follow the guidelines above as explained under “Game Format.”
In the event that the game is still tied after the first overtime period, a second overtime of 1 minute in length will be played and so on until the time is broken.
Each OT period will start with a jump ball.
PLAYOFF FORMAT
There will be a playoff of the top 4 teams in each division. Winners of each division will then play for the overall championship. The IM director reserves the right to change the playoff format due to time constraints.
Seedings for playoffs will be determined by win/loss records. The team with the most wins will play the team with the least wins, and so on. First tie breaker will be head-to-head game scores. Second tiebreaker will be a coin flip with play- in game.
All playoff games will follow the same game rules as regular season play.
