Academic Policies
31: Guidelines Governing the Cancellation of Classes
Purpose
To establish a reasonable policy governing the cancellation of classes not covered in the College’s weather policy.
Introduction
Except in unusual circumstances, instructors are expected to meet all classes on the days and times assigned. Illness is usually the only reason for a last-minute cancellation. Weather emergencies are covered in Capital College Guideline 34, which can be found easily at the college’s web site.
Guidelines
Students have a right to 14.75 weeks of instruction; faculty have the right to participate in professional activities designed to enhance their teaching, research, and performance skills. The critical issue is that classes must be covered and that is best done in consultation with the School Director or designate.
- Faculty members who must miss more than one class for any reason must notify the School Director, the Administrative Assistant, and the students. Cancellations incorporated into syllabi must also be cleared with the School Director or designate prior to the cancellation date.
- Arrangements for coverage cannot be informally arranged by faculty in secrecy. All arrangements must be communicated to the staff assistants in sufficient time to make plans to cope with any potential problems.
- The Schools should use the existing Travel Request Form or create such forms as may be necessary to implement this guideline.
