Week–long summer study tours scheduled

May 13, 2009

Area residents can experience the history of Broadway or explore America’s industrial and energy legacy by taking part in week-long study tours offered this summer by Penn State Harrisburg Continuing Education.

In cooperation with its School of Humanities, the college is offering the tours which can be taken either for three academic credits each or for personal enrichment.

From June 14 to 21, Instructor in Music O. David Deitz will provide cultural, historical, and performance looks at the American musical theater in “Broadway Bound.”  While examining the historical development of the Broadway musical, participants will get a backstage tour of one of the nation’s largest and most modern theatrical facilities – Sight and Sound in Strasburg – and wrap up the week with a trip to New York City’s theater district to take in a Broadway show.

From July 19 to 25, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission historian Dr. Kenneth Wolensky will conduct an in-depth, statewide examination of industrial and energy-related locales in the Commonwealth with a look to state’s economic and energy future.

From Titusville to Steelton, the class will visit steel towns, steel mills, coal mines, the Drake Well National Historic Landmark, the home of the Molly Maguires, and even a 21st century wind farm.

Complete tour itineraries, costs, and registration information is available from the Office of Continuing Education at 717-948-6505 or by e-mailing cetraining@psu.edu.
