Celebration marks NCATE accreditation

Penn State Harrisburg’s Teacher Education Unit reached an historic milestone in November.

On March 3, the unit, the college its School of Behavioral Sciences and Education, and the external community formally celebrated the accomplishment

The college’s commitment to achieve national accreditation of its professional academic programs whenever the opportunity exists reached that milestone when the Teacher Education Unit was granted full accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The NCATE accreditation covers Penn State Harrisburg programs in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, secondary education English, Social Studies, and Mathematics, and the master’s program in Teaching and Curriculum.

At the time of the NCATE announcement, Penn State Harrisburg Chancellor Madlyn L. Hanes said, “The accreditation of our teacher education programs gives endorsement to our longstanding reputation for curricular relevancy and innovation at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, acknowledges our extensive involvement with the region’s school districts, and recognizes the considerable talents of our faculty scholars.”

The March 3 reception and celebration of the accreditation, with administration, faculty, staff, former students, and community educators in attendance, featured congratulatory remarks from Chancellor Hanes, Vice President for Commonwealth Campuses John Romano, Chair of the college’s Board of Advisers James C. Byerly, Director of the School of Behavioral Sciences and Education William Milheim, and Director of Teacher Education Steven Melnick.

The event included the presentation of the formal letter of accreditation presented to Dr. Hanes by Dr. Milheim.

With the addition of NCATE, other national accreditations at Penn State Harrisburg include all the undergraduate and graduate programs in the School of Business Administration by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and all the engineering and engineering technology majors in the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The Master of Public Administration major in the School of Public Affairs is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA).
