‘Going Back to School Chats’ slated for Medical Center

January 27, 2008

Penn State Harrisburg’s commitment to make higher education more convenient for adult learners residing or working in the Hershey area is off to a resounding start.

Introduced for the first time in January, courses delivered to the Penn State Hershey Medical Center which lead to credit certificates and an associate degree in Letters, Arts, and Sciences have attracted 88 students in the initial semester of the offerings.

”Certificates permit students to earn several milestones on the way to a degree and the courses are offered to accommodate busy adults with some of the classes even including an online component to ease in-class time,” Ronda Stump, Penn State Harrisburg’s undergraduate credit program coordinator at the Medical Center says.

Stump also point out, “For the summer, we are also inviting Penn State students and those from other higher institutions who reside in the Hershey area to study with us at a location more convenient for them.”

To familiarize adult working professionals in the Hershey area with the programs, five “Going Back to School Chats” have been scheduled. “The workshops cover topics important to adult students, including making the decision to return to school, taking the first steps, courses and programs available, balancing work and school, financial aid, transfer credits, and strategies for success.  “The chats are a way for adult students to learn more about returning to the classroom in a relaxed, informal setting,” says Stump.

The sessions will be February 4, March 3, March 12, and April 7 from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m., in the BMR, Room  C-1810 at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center; and February 18 from 12:15 p.m. to  12:45 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library.

Courses to be offered this summer include: Mammalian Anatomy, Effective Speech, Effective Writing: Writing in the Social Sciences, Fitness Theory and Practice, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Evolution of Jazz, Introductory Principles of Nutrition, Introduction to World Religions, the New Testament, and Introductory Sociology.
