Vita

Charles J.D. Kupfer grew up in Washington state and Washington, D.C. His B.A. in Writing Seminars came from Johns Hopkins University. He then studied at Oxford University and the University of Texas, where he received his Ph.D. in American Studies in 1998. Kupfer also worked as a reporter and editor, and taught for three years at Michigan State.

Kupfer's first book, We Felt the Flames: Hitler's Blitzkrieg, America's Story, a work of journalism history using American Studies methods, appeared in 2004. He is currently working on another manuscript. His academic articles have appeared in such journals as Prospects: An Annual of American Cultural Studies, The International Journal of the History of Sports, Iron Game History: The Journal of Physical Culture, and Pennsylvania History. His areas of scholarly interest include modern culture, intellectual, diplomatic, and sports history.

Kupfer is past president of the Middle Atlantic American Studies Association, and now serves on the MAASA Board. He is active in various Commonwealth Public Heritage initiatives, serving on the Pennsylvania Historical Marker Commission, the Friends of Fort Hunter Board of Directors, and as Penn State Harrisburg American Studies Program liaison to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

He lives in Camp Hill with his wife, Kim, their four children, two cats, a hamster, and a big dog.

Sen. Vance to deliver commencement keynote

State Senator Patricia H. Vance will deliver the keynote address when Penn State Harrisburg confers more than 500 undergraduate and graduate degrees during fall commencement ceremonies Saturday, December 19.

The ceremonies for students who have earned associate, bachelor’s master’s, and doctoral degrees will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Giant Center, Hershey.

Learning Center program earns recertification

Penn State Harrisburg’s Learning Center peer tutor training program has earned a five-year recertification from the College Reading and Learning Association. With this certification, Penn State Harrisburg remains one of only seven certified colleges in the capital region.

The certification provides recognition and positive reinforcement for the tutors’ successful work and sets a standard of skills and training for tutors.

Hershey High ensemble to join college choir for Dec. 8 concert

Hershey High School’s vocal ensemble, “Cantabile,” will join Penn State Harrisburg’s student choir to herald the coming of the holiday season in a free public concert December 8 at 5:15 p.m. in the Morrison Gallery of the college library.

“Cantabile” is an auditioned ensemble that meets daily at the high school.  It is one of four choirs in the school’s vocal music program.  Repertoire performed by Hershey Cantabile ranges from Renaissance to popular.
