American Studies/ Humanities Student Association
The objectives of the American Studies/ Humanities Student Association is to provide a formal or informal atmosphere for students of any major to come together and view, experience, and/or discuss issues, items, or events which involve American Studies and the other Humanities, including but not limited to art, architecture, literature, philosophy, music, theater, dance, crafts, languages, cultures, anthropology, archaeology, art history, and history. The club strives to offer activities for all students at Penn State Harrisburg that will be not only entertaining, but also enriching. Past activities have included reading of Edger Allen Poe, dinner theatre trips, and a variety of community service events. The club is currently advised by Dr. Charles Kupfer and meets 2 times per month. All students are encouraged to join.
The Capital Times
The Capital Times, or Captimes as it is often called, is the Penn State Harrisburg student newspaper. The Captimes is published every 2 weeks, with 8 issues a semester and 16 issues a year. Like other clubs and organizations, the Captimes is run by students and has a faculty adviser. The Capital Times is run on a budget provided by the Student Activities Fee, which comes from student tuition, making Captimes in every sense "The Voice of PSH". The Captimes is an excellent place for students in all majors to gain hands-on experience in journalism, photography, graphic design, desktop publishing, public relations, and advertising. For more information, contact the Captimes staff via e-mail at captimes@psu.edu or call 948-6440.
Photo Club
The Photo Club is for any student who has an interest in photography, from the experienced photographer to someone just testing out a new camera. The club has its own darkroom and digital photography equipment. It has regular meetings and events during the school year. For more information, contact Dr. Sam Winch, faculty adviser, via email at spw10@psu.edu, or call 948-6391.
Tarnhelm
Tarnhelm is Penn State Harrisburg's literary and arts magazine.
Founded in 1971, Tarnhelm appears annually and publishes students'
creative works, including poetry, short stories, photography, paintings,
graphics, creative essays, and one-act plays. Students in all programs
across the campus are invited to submit their creations anonymously, and
the student editors and Tarnhelm staff select submissions for publication.
Prizes for best poem, short story, and visual art are awarded each year
as selected by outside judges who specialize in the fields. Tarnhelm
also provides students with hands-on experience in editing, lay-out and
design, business operations, public relations, and other aspects of
publishing. For more information, contact Dr. Julie Kearney, faculty
advisor to Tarnhelm, at jkearney@psu.edu.
Television Broadcasting Club
The Television Broadcasting Club began at Penn State Harrisburg in 2002. The club strives to give students not only hands-on experience, but also an understanding of most of the components that are involved with television broadcasting. The club covers school events and perhaps some off-campus stories, which will aid in the creation of student awareness here about campus and community news and events. The club will allow students to create their own reel, or with the current advancements in today's technology, a DVD. The Television Broadcasting Club can help students find a means of showcasing their work for viewing by future employers. The club is also a good way to meet people and have fun doing something you like.
