Ancient History: Roman
“I am an ancient historian and classicist with interests in the history of ancient Italic religions, the traditions and texts of Roman law, and early Christian literature. My research over the past decade has focused on Roman law as expressed and reflected in the administrative decrees (and related texts) of the medieval Hungary monarchy; the literary texts and historical contexts of Christian scholarly literature (esp. by Jerome and Augustine) of the 4th century CE; the documentary (epigraphic/inscriptional) evidence for municipal life in ancient Italy. A current project, soon to be published, is a volume of edited essays on ‘Religion in Republican Rome’. I am also completing an edition of the inscriptions (and other written material evidence) excavated at the ancient Roman colony of Cosa (on the western coast of Italy); I am currently working on two editions and studies of certain of Jerome's non-theological, highly-entertaining and influential works. My instructional interests and activities range from introductory ‘first-year seminars’ (a recent one, largely successful, was on ‘Religion and Medicine in the ancient Mediterranean world’). I particularly enjoy small-group classes on Roman politics and graduate seminars on a range of ancient Greek and Roman topics. ”
