Field

Roman History

" I am an ancient historian with research interests in Roman social and political history, Latin epigraphy, ancient warfare, and archaeological methodology. My research has focused mainly on Roman leisure culture, in the form of public bathing culture and the Roman games. I also work on terminology in Latin inscriptions and the phenomenon of ‘alternative’ archaeology My current book project, entitled The Lure of the Arena: Social Psychology, Spectatorship and the Roman Games, explores the psychological processes at work among the arena crowd to offer a new perspective on the infamous Roman games. I use many visual aids and Powerpoint slides for all my teaching. As part of my outreach activities, I have produced two courses for The Teaching Company."
