About Us

The Nineteenth Century

Resources for study in nineteenth century history are especially strong at Penn State.  The Americanists in this group do innovative work on intellectual history, environmental history, gender, sexuality, religion, labor, material culture, and military history. Similar thematic interests are investigated by faculty who focus on nineteenth-century Latin America and Asia.  Undergraduates can learn not only about the American Civil War, one of our most popular US History courses; they can also study American cultural and intellectual history, as well as learn about what was happening in China, Latin America, and Africa at the same time. Graduate students participate actively in programs sponsored by the Richards Civil War Era Center, Breaking the Silence initiative, and Gender History Workshop. These include visiting scholars, and cultural events exploring themes in nineteenth-century history.
