Thank you for your interest in the Africana Research Center's  (ARC) work and the programs we sponsor. We invite you to explore the content of our site for more information on our efforts to support the development and dissemination of research and scholarship devoted to the Black experience across the Diaspora. Our focus, although international in scope, is to sustain and stimulate the development of Africana initiatives at Penn State.

Our Mission

  • To promote research and scholarship conducted by Penn State faculty and students that will advance the historical and contemporary understanding and enhancement of the lives of people across the African Diaspora.
  • To serve as a catalyst for promoting an enabling environment where cultural production and discourse on diversity are nurtured to advance the research, teaching, and outreach mission of Penn State University.
 
The ARC Highlights Advisory Board Member Dr. Eugene Lengerich

ARC Advisory Board Member Dr. Eugene Lengerich's research on rural cancer prevention andthumb_lengerich.jpg control efforts were highlighted in the Spring 2008 issue of "Penn State Outreach".  

Dr. Eugene Lengerich leads the Northern Appalachia Cancer Network, one of the oldest community-academic partnerships for cancer prevention and control in the country. Dr. Lengerich is an Associate Professor of Public Health Sciences in the College of Medicine at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, has also received the 2008 Penn State Award for Faculty Outreach.

Africana Research Center Fellows End Successful Year in Celebration

thumb_fellows_pic.jpg On May 1, 2008, The Africana Research Center honored its postdoctoral and dissertation fellows at the Nittany Lion Inn for a highly productive year. The fellowships afford emerging and early career scholars the opportunity to conduct research as well as develop and showcase their scholarship with minimal teaching or administrative responsibilities. Each fellow is conducting research that is central to Africa and/or the African Diaspora and each has been successful in maximizing their respective fellowships.
