January 19th, 2012 - Troy Weller (tnw5044@psu.edu)
The Penn State Icers will take on the West Virginia Mountaineers twice this weekend at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. The teams will first play on Friday (Jan. 20) at 7 p.m., and come back on Saturday (Jan. 21) for a matinee matchup at 3:30 p.m.
In their history, the Icers have won 34 of 35 games against West Virginia dating back to the 1990-1991 season. The lone blemish came in February 1996, when the two teams settle for a 5-5 tie.
Penn State (17-3-1) is currently the No. 1 overall seed in the latest ACHA rankings. West Virginia (15-12) is ranked No. 23.
The Icers enter the weekend having won all eleven games they have played at home during the 2011-2012 season. The last time Penn State was beat on their home ice was on February 12, 2011, when they lost to Robert Morris 8-5.
After two victories against Rhode Island last weekend, Penn State looks to continue the momentum as they approach the end of the season. The team will travel to Ohio University next weekend for two games before closing out the regular season at home with six games in February. Penn State will host Oklahoma for two (Feb. 3-4), Mercyhurst for two (Feb. 10-11) and Duquesne (Feb. 17) before finishing the regular season against Kent State (Feb. 24).
The names of Justin Kirchhevel, Tommy Olczyk, Bryce Johnson and Kurt Collins can be found atop the stat sheet for Penn State so far this year. The Icers are anchored in net by P.J. Musico and Matt Madrazo, both of whom have played well for Head Coach Guy Gadowsky.
Fans can purchase tickets at the Hockey Office in the East Area Locker Room until 5 p.m. Friday. Tickets will also be sold at the door or can be ordered through the Penn State Hockey Ticket Office at 814-867-5522.
