What is NRHH?
The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH is a service of the National Association of College and University Residence Halls, Inc. NRHH is the only national organization that exclusively recognizes leaders in the residence halls. Leaders across the country have contributed many hours of personal time in an effort to make the college experience meaningful to on-campus residents in a vast array of ways. These leaders often go unrecognized on their campus – recognizing their contributions is the fundamental purpose of an NRHH chapter.
NRHH was founded on April 25th, 1964 at the University of Denver during the annual NACURH Conference. Between 1977 and 1987, pins and certificates were introduced to recognize members of the honorary. In addition, many awards were created, primarily the Of The Month Awards and the NRHH Outstanding Chapter of the Year Award. Today, over 200 chapters are affiliated with the honorary across the country. Chapters induct both active members, who are current students that currently live on-campus as well as honorary members, who are faculty and staff members that currently work at the institution.
Membership in chapters is strictly limited to one percent of each school's on-campus residence hall population, or 20 members, whichever is greater. NRHH is a very select group of leaders, and being nominated and inducted is a great honor.
Nittany Chapter History
The constitution of the Nittany Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary was approved in October of 1984- soon after, the first group of members was inducted. The first banquet was held on Sunday, April 21, 1985 at the Penn State Sheraton. Since then, hundreds of members have been recognized by the Chapter for their role in Penn State student life. The banquets have changed location, from the Nittany Lion Inn to the Bryce Jordan Center to the Atherton Hotel, and now here in the Gold Room. Our alumni have gone on to work in residence life roles in universities across the country, have become leaders of alumni chapters, and have left their mark on the Penn State community.
