Lady
Icers Goalie Finally Given Opportunity In Net |
| Daily
Collegian - Kristen Reed knew her debut in net for
the Lady Icers was coming -- she just didn't know when. Reed,
a junior who normally plays defense, had been working out in
net for the Lady Icers for the past two weeks in practice. The
new goalie's first assignment between the pipes: step onto the
ice in the third period of Sunday's tight game against a potent
Ohio State offense. |

|
New
Lineup Changes Don't Help Lady Icers |
| Daily
Collegian - Penn State Lady Icers coach Chris Whittemore
took on the role of hockey chemist for Sunday's game at Ohio
State. Whittemore has kept line combinations relatively staid
this season. After suffering a 2-1 loss to the Buckeyes on Saturday
Whittemore elected to mix things up -- quite a bit. The goal,
he said, was to find a way to get the Lady Icers scoring more
against upper-level competition. "We get chances against
these [top] teams," Whittemore said. "We just don't
bury them." |

Lady
Icers Suffer Through Tough Weekend |
| Daily
Collegian - This weekend was an eye-opener. For more
than two months the Penn State Lady Icers anticipated getting
a second shot at facing the University of Rhode Island, the
same team that handed Penn State its first two losses of the
season in mid-November. The Lady Icers were especially psyched
for the rematch because it would happen on their home turf,
the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. So much for that. |
|
|
Penn
State Dismantles Intrastate Rival |
| Daily
Collegian - A visit to the University of Pennsylvania
was supposed to be a tough road game for the Penn State Lady
Icers. The No. 4 Quakers came into the game ranked only one
spot below the No. 3 Lady Icers in the ECWHL rankings. The 'tough
road game' turned out to be a 10-0 smackdown of the Quakers
on their own ice. Saturday's decisive victory improves the Lady
Icers record to 13-6-1.The win may help to boost the team's
12th-place national ranking as the season winds down |

Lady
Icers Have Successful Trip; Rhode Island Still on the Horizon |
Daily
Collegian - This weekend's three-game trip to Maryland
didn't count in the league standings for the Lady Icers. They
did, however, mean a lot. For starters, Penn State wanted
to get some points entering this week's critical two-game
home series with Rhode Island. |

Minutewomen
Shut Down, Shut Out PSU Lady Icers |
| AMHERST,
Mass. -- Lady Icers coach Chris Whittemore, rarely at a loss
for words, was left shaking his head. It was mere minutes after
his team had been shut down by Massachusetts, 3-0, yesterday
at the Mullins Center and Whittemore couldn't say anything. |

|
ACHA
Ranking #2 Released; Lady Icers Maintain 3rd Spot in East |
| With
the postponement of December's games against the University
of Massachusetts, the Penn State Lady Icers will have to wait
a little longer to see if they can make the jump up in the polls.
UMass retains its #9 ranking nationally and #2 ranking in the
East, while the Lady Icers also stay in the same position. The
only movement in the polls was the University of Wisconsin which
jumped from #7 in the country to #5 |

Lady
Icers Weekend Series Features Two of Top Three |
| Daily
Collegian - This weekend's showdown between the Penn
State Lady Icers and Massachusetts will showcase two of the
ACHA's better teams in the East. UMass, ranked second in the
season's first ACHA regional rankings, and third-ranked Penn
State are both playing their first games since before Thanksgiving
break. |

|
Johnston
Finds Her Place With Lady Icers |
| Daily
Collegian - Lauren Johnston came into this season as
one of the Lady Icers' most seasoned players -- and one of the
team's newest. It was an interesting juxtaposition. Johnston,
a junior from West Chester, was in the University of Vermont
women's hockey program last year but she was not listed on the
team's varsity roster. That didn't mean she was spared from
the Catamounts' intense workouts lasting three to four hours
per day, including off-ice work. |

Lady
Icers Destroy Buffalo Two Times Over Weekend |
| Daily
Collegian - When the Penn State Lady Icers took to
the ice Saturday at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion against the University
at Buffalo, there was no playing around. This wasn't just any
old game for the Lady Icers, still smarting from two losses
at Rhode Island the weekend prior. Those losses knocked Penn
State from the ranks of the unbeaten and lifted the Rams to
the top spot in the ACHA East rankings released this past Friday. There
was business to tend to. |

First
ACHA Rankings Released; Lady Icers 3rd in East, 12th Nationally |
| With
the release of the first ACHA Women's Division Rankings of the
new season, the Penn State Lady Icers find themselves sitting
in third place in the ACHA East and 12th place in the nation.
The national poll finds several league newcomers in the top
12, with Robert Morris College of Illinois and Lindenwood University
ranked 3rd and 4th. Defending National Champion Michigan State
opens the season at #1, and the University of Rhode Island makes
a big jump from last year, with their undefeated record bringing
them the #2 National ranking and #1 in the East. |

Lady
Icers Face Buffalo In Two Home Games |
| Daily
Collegian - The Penn State Lady Icers went into their
weekend games as one of two undefeated teams in the ACHA East.
However at the end of the trip, the Penn State team was no longer
undefeated after 3-0 and 4-1 losses to the Rhode Island Rams.
The Lady Icers will look to get back on the winning track this
Saturday against the University at Buffalo. |

|
2004
National Tournament to Be Held at Michigan State University |
| For
the second year in a row, the Lady Icers will head into the
season with a goal of getting to the state of Michigan. The
2004 Women's ACHA National Tournament will be hosted by defending
champ Michigan State in East Lansing, Michigan. With the addition
of several new teams to the ACHA, the tournament will expand
to 12 teams and will run in a format similar to the Men's Division
1. |
|
Lady
Icers Prove They Can Win Tight Games |
| Daily
Collegian -The way Penn State Lady Icers coach Chris
Whittemore sees it, routs don't provide the opportunities to
check on his team's desire and drive. "Beating a team 9-1,
10-1, 19-1, 20-2 doesn't show you anything," Whittemore
said. "It just shows you're one or two steps ahead of your
opponent." |
|
|
Lady
Icers Red Hot Offense Faces Test This Weekend |
| Daily
Collegian -Three games have yielded 37 goals. To say
that the offense for the Penn State Lady Icers is on fire would
be an understatement. A
pair of 9-1 wins at the University at Buffalo last weekend showed
the Lady Icers offense, which sparkled in a 19-1 win over Central
Penn Oct. 25, was for real. |

Icers Announcer Greg Whipple Passes Away |
| Lady
Icers announcer Greg Whipple, 24, died on June 11, 2003 of natural
causes. Greg loved sports and was an avid Lady Icers and Icers
fan, and became one of the inaugural members of the Lady Icers
Booster Club. Wanting to help out the team in any way possible,
Greg became the team announcer for the 2002-2003 season, and
was well-known for his "Let's Play Hockey" phrase
to begin games. He was buried wearing a Penn State hockey jersey
and with a Lady Icers puck. Greg's family asks that any memorial
donations be made to the American Diabetes Foundation,356

Lady
Icers Won't Count Out Buffalo Yet |
| Daily
Collegian - Early-season results say Penn State's
Lady Icers might have an easy time handling the University at
Buffalo this weekend. In
contrast to the Lady Icers' 3-0-1 start, the Freeze is 0-7,
losing its games by an average of eight goals per contest. It
has been shut out three times already. |

Hearing
Loss Will Not Stop PSU Athlete In Life, Class |
| Daily
Collegian - When Rebecca Holmes plays hockey, she
sometimes keeps skating after the referee has blown the whistle.
It's not that she gets carried away in the game, but it's because
she can't
hear the whistle: Holmes is deaf. |

Icers Finish in Eighth Place at Nationals To End 2002-2003
Season |
| Penn
State knew that it wouldn't have an easy go of it this year
at Nationals, however the teams eighth place finish is seen
as a dissapointment. The tournament didn't start well, with
the team dropping a 5-1 loss to eventual National Champion,
Michigan State. That game was followed by shutout losses to
host Western Michigan 3-0 and to 3rd place finisher West LA
College, 5-0. In the seventh place game, Penn State lost to
St. Cloud State University 4-2, making for a very dissapointing
end to the season. On a better note, sophomores Katie King and
Becky Holmes were named to the Honorable Mention All-Tournament
Team.

'Nothing
Compares 2" Lady Icer Lauren Shaw |
| Daily
Collegian - Listen very closely
at any Penn State Lady Icers game before warm-ups, and one may
just barely hear some Celine Dion, Whitney Houston or Michael
Bolton wafting out of the tunnel and into the stands.Pin the
blame on senior forward Lauren Shaw. |
|
|
Deafness
Doesn't Stop Holmes From Ruling The Ice |
| Daily
Collegian - For the second straight
season, sophomore Lady Icer Becky Holmes has proved herself
a very valuable and integral part of the team. Scoring 25 points
(13 goals, 12 assists) in 26 regular-season games on defense
merits roaring crowd applause and demands a great deal of attention
from opposing teams. |

Lady Icers Leave Ice Pavilion For Last Time |
| Daily
Collegian - Senior
defender Jenna Lictenwalner shyly smiled and quietly trudged
off the rink and into the tunnel towards the locker room with
Lady Icers assistant coach Derek Arledge not far behind.
Meanwhile,
senior forward Kate Specchio grabbed fellow senior forward Lauren
Shaw's skates and started dragging her as Shaw lay down on the
rink, clawing at the ice and screaming "I don't want to
go!" |

Icers To Focus On Defense For New Season |
| Daily
Collegian - They
will go only as far as their defense takes them. Coming off
a third-place finish at the ACHA National Championship Tournament
last year, the Penn State Lady Icers have made winning the ACHA
Championship their goal this year. To do so, the team has placed
its focus on defense. The defensive focus will also help to
compensate for the loss of the team's leading scorer, Andrea
Lavelle, who graduated in the spring. |
