We have a lot of things planned this semester, so I'll just jump right into it.

First, we had a table at today's involvement fair - if you weren't there, you should have been. We have a lot of potential new members, but if you missed it you can get added to our mailing list by contacting our webmaster at bsf5033@psu.edu or through our contact form. Our first meeting is next Monday at 7pm on the Hub lawn, and will feature a more in-depth introduction to Amnesty for the new members.

We've got several new ideas for events this semester, so come to the meetings and keep checking this site to find out about those. We're also always open to any suggestions you have, so feel free to contact us through Angel or this site's contact form with any questions, comments, or suggestions.

Just a quick summer news update - our own PR/Events officer Stephanie just completed her orientation and is now working for Amnesty USA's Mid-Atlantic Regional Office as a Student Area Coordinator for central Pennsylvania. She's quite excited about her new position, as well as her existing officer position with AI PSU, and we're all looking forward to an excellent upcoming semester.'

Semester Wrapup

I apologize for the recent lack of news - finals and such were pretty much taking up all my time. Anyway, I just want to make one final post to end the semester.

Since my last update we had a rather successful Jamnesty concert - managed to raise some money for the club, and despite our final band being a bit tardy, it went quite well. In addition to Jamnesty we had John Prendergast speak about conflict minerals in Congo, and how these minerals, used in our common high-tech devices, are fueling slave labor and war in Congo. For more information on this, see EnoughProject.org

Finally, we've elected our new officers for next semester. While our graduating seniors will be missed greatly, I would like to congratulate our new officers of Arielle as Co-Coordinator, Steph as Events and PR, and Paul and Alexis as Recruitment and Retention officers. Returning officers include Anna and Tara as Co-Coordinators, Tara as Treasurer, Aaron as Secretary, and myself as Webmaster. We've already begun planning for next semester, so be ready for some great events when classes resume.

AGM and Updates

Well, the AISUA Annual General Meeting (AGM) was last weekend, and it was quite an exciting time...despite some problems with sleeping arrangements due to arriving at 4 in the morning on Friday. Events included a rally for immigrants' rights, some very informative workshops, and a few panel discussions, along with a concert by Chad Stokes of State Radio, a screening of the film Torturing Democracy, and much more. It was a rather busy weekend, with much sleep deprivation. But it was an excellent experience, and I highly recommend it to any who did not attend.

In other news, I've been doing some more updates to the site. Most of it has been backend work (making things easier for the next webmaster, and myself,) but I also added the video for State of Georgia by State Radio, which was written about the Troy Davis case. I have also added links to Torturing Democracy, which I highly recommend if you have the time. And as always, let me know if I've broken anything during my site updates - It all worked fine in my testing, but something may have slipped by.

Meeting, Jamnesty, Etc

Sorry for this post being so late. Anyway, here's some updates from the last meeting (Feb 26th) and officer meeting (Mar 1st): We had a presentation from Laura on human rights issues in Mauritania and we discussed Jamnesty, the AGM, and other coming events. At the moment Jamnesty is set for April 17th at Sozo's, but this is still somewhat uncertain. A few other events are in the planning stages as well - more details on those will come as we get things finalized.

In other news, I did a bit of updating on the website. For anyone who was trying to view it from Internet Explorer and having some problems, those should be fixed now. The no script version of the page also got much improved (it's now the same page, just with a different header). It should also be loading faster and running smoother. And we've got some improved graphics thanks to Ky! As always, send any questions/comments/bugs about the site to AIPSUWebmaster@psu.edu

Meeting summary

I've got a bit of news from our latest meeting, which just adjourned: First, there will be no officer meeting this Sunday, 2/15. There is also no general meeting next week, 2/19 - instead, members and anyone else interested are encouraged to attend a talk by Andrew Miller titled Amazon in Peril: How defending the rights of the forest peoples can help save the Amazon, and the rest of us., being hosted by the State College Peace Center. This will be held at 7:30 in the State College Municipal Building. This week's meeting also had an excellent discussion on human rights in Cambodia led by Anna. And we're looking for venues to hold this semester's Jamnesty event, so let us know if you have any ideas!

New site finally live!

Well, you may now notice that the new website is finally up. We've been having some issues with the site permissions, so I've been hosting it and mildly updating it on a separate server until now, which is why there are news posts already dated almost a month ago. But anyway, it's up now, hope you like it! I'll try to keep this page up to date with all the new AI news over the semester. I've also set up an RSS feed, which can be found at http://www.clubs.psu.edu/up/amnesty/rss/feed.rss

Plans for the semester

The first AIPSU officers meeting was today, and we have several events already being planned for this semester. We are planning on having our Jamnesty event, and hoping to have John Prendergast from the Peace Center speak on human rights and corporate accountability in the Amazon, as well as bringing Amnesty's Camp Darfur event to PSU. Other events we are considering include Amnesty's Get on the Bus demonstration and possible events for the 100 Days Campaign. More information on these and other Amnesty events will be appearing here and on flyers around campus as the semester progresses, so watch for those and attend the general meetings to help with planning!

New website!

Well, it's about time for Amnesty to start a new semester and a new website. Last semester was quite eventful, having vigils for Matthew Shepard and Troy Davis, Jamnesty, the Global Write-a-thon, and others. And we have many more planned for this coming semester, though of course these may change as global events do. As for the website - Hope you like the layout and new features. Note there's a lightweight version (link at the bottom) that will automatically be activated on computers with javascript disabled or mobile devices. Any questions/comments/suggestions, send them to AIPSUWebmaster@psu.edu
