Founded in London in 1961, Amnesty International is a Nobel Prize-winning (in 1977) grassroots activist organization with over 2.2 million members worldwide. Amnesty International undertakes research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

The Penn State chapter of Amnesty International was founded in 1986 to represent Amnesty International on the Penn State University campus and to promote human rights for all people and to enhance human rights education on the Penn State campus and surronding area.
